domestic agricultural machinery

When they talk aboutdomestic agricultural machinery, many immediately imagine something bulky, outdated, always in need of repair. Familiar stereotype, right? But reality, especially in the last seven or eight years, is much more complex and interesting. This is no longer just a matter of patriotism or forced savings. This is about how equipment should actually work in our often specific field conditions - from a short harvesting campaign in the rain to work on heavy, floating soils. And here lies the main challenge both for manufacturers and for us who operate this equipment.

From stereotypes to specific units

Take, for example, tillage implements. Imported disk drives are certainly good. But setting them up for specific humidity and soil type is a headache. Our manufacturer, the same Rostselmash? with the line ?Buran? or lesser-known regional factories, often include a greater margin of safety in the design and, more importantly, a wider range of adjustments. Not always ideal from an ergonomic point of view, I agree. But a mechanic in the field, having a regular wrench on hand, can “adjust” it. unit for the situation. This is not stated in the instructions, this is knowledge that is passed on from the foreman to the machine operator.

I had experience with one combined soil-cultivating complex from a company from Buryatia. On paper - excellent characteristics. In practice, it turned out that the frame was not very well balanced for transportation along broken public roads to a remote site. We had to make additional fastenings for the wings ourselves. The manufacturer was sent a photo and description of the modification. Reaction? Six months later, in the new batch, the fasteners were already in the design. This, in my opinion, is living developmentdomestic technology- through feedback from the field.

Or another point - versatility. Our combines are often criticized for being less productive than Claas or John Deere. But if you look not at the ideal Canadian black soil, but at our field with variable relief, with areas where the moisture content of the grain varies, then what is important is not the maximum speed, but the ability of the unit to cover the entire heterogeneous site without stopping or breaking down. Our engineers seem to intuitively understand this, with an emphasis on reliability of transmissions and ease of cleaning the drum on the go.

Service as part of the design

This is perhaps where the gap with some Western brands is most noticeable. A service network is more than just points on a map. This is the availability of specific spare parts in a specific warehouse in the regional center at the height of the harvest. With ?Kuzbass? or ?Yenisei? The story from the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant is often sad: you wait for weeks for the simplest fuel pump. But with equipment from some more niche, but focused manufacturers, everything is different.

Here we can mention, for example,Hulunbuir ?Jiujia Machinery Manufacturing Company. Their website (https://www.cn-fascar.ru) positions them as a modern, integrated smart manufacturing enterprise for agriculture and livestock. What does this mean in practice? We tested their haylage baler. The machine itself performed well, especially the roll wrapping system. But what really impressed me was the logistics of spare parts. Upon a call from the dealer, the required hydraulic cylinder repair kit was delivered not to the city, but directly to the farm, within two days, although we were in a fairly remote area. For them, apparently, sales and service- these are not different departments, but a single process. And this is a serious argument when choosing.

Such an organization is rare. More often you are faced with the fact that there is a dealer, but there is no spare parts warehouse. Or there is a warehouse, but there is something there that does not break. But quickly getting an O-ring for the unloading conveyor of a combine harvester in September is a quest. Therefore, now, when considering new equipment, the first thing I am interested in is not only the price, but the depth and completeness of the service stock in the region. Without this, any, even the most advanced car, turns into a pile of metal at the most inopportune moment.

Ownership price vs. purchase price

Everyone talks about the cost of purchase. But in real agribusiness, especially medium-sized ones, they think differently. The cost of ownership is calculated over the life cycle. And here atdomestic agricultural machineryoften there is a hidden advantage. It's not just about the price of spare parts, which is lower on average.

It's about maintainability. The design is often less integrated and modules are easier to replace. This means that your regular mechanic, Vasily Ivanovich, who is “both a Swiss and a reaper?”, can fix it in a field workshop, without having the latest model diagnostic computer. Yes, this can mean more downtime on the clock. But then you don’t depend on the arrival of an engineer from the capital, who will arrive in three days and charge the call as half of a new unit.

There was an illustrative case with a seeder. Imported, precise, with electronics for each row. The main control board has failed. Official repair - replacement, wait a month, the amount is astronomical. Our analogue, less “smart”, but with a more distributed control system. One of the seeding sensors is broken. It was turned off, replaced with a mechanical damper for that row, and the seeder continued to operate, albeit with manual control on one of the 24 rows. In the end, the yield across the field was not critically affected. This is the very “survivability” for which equipment made with an understanding of our realities is valued.

Smart manufacturing: what's behind the buzzwords?

Let's go back to the exampleHulunbuir company ?Jiujia?. Their description includes the phrase “intellectual production”. In reality, marketing aside, this often means using modern CNC machines and, more importantly, quality control systems on the assembly line. For the end user this translates into more consistent build quality. The same baler had very even welds and the same tightening of all critical bolted connections - it is clear that the assembly was carried out according to regulations, and not “by eye”.

This is a general trend. New factories, such as those built in special economic zones to produce, say, potato harvesters or fertilizer spreaders, are initially designed to meet modern standards. And it’s no longer that artisanaldomestic technology, which is remembered from Soviet times. This is a product that should compete not at half the price, but with a combination of factors: adaptability, maintainability, service logistics and an adequate, but not cheap, price.

However, intelligence should be not only in production, but also in the machine itself. And there is something to work on. Parallel driving systems, precision farming - these are often third-party solutions that “tie up” to technology. I would like to see more native, deeply integrated solutions from manufacturers. So far this is rather an exception.

The future: integration, not copying

Where is the industry heading? It seems to me that the path is not to blindly copy Western models. They are created for other economies, other scales and other agricultural crops. Our path is to integrate the world's best technological solutions (hydraulics, materials, telemetry elements) into structures originally designed for our tasks.

For example, the same company we were talking about unitesresearch and development, production, sales and service. This is the correct vector. This means that development engineers are not disconnected from the feedback of service engineers and agronomists. The problem identified in the Voronezh region may lead to modification of the unit for the entire next batch of equipment supplied to the steppe regions.

The bottom line is simple.Domestic agricultural machineryceased to be synonymous with “second class”. It becomes a tool for pragmatists who consider not only the money to buy, but also the risks and opportunities in the conditions of a particular economy. It requires a more thoughtful approach when choosing, greater involvement in the process of operation, but also a return on it when you have found “the one?” manufacturer and lined up work can be extremely high. This is no longer about “supporting your own”, it’s about an effective business tool. Let it not be ideal, but it is your own, understandable and, most importantly, working here and now.
